The Spark That Started It All

As a kid, I found pure magic in sports card collecting. The thrill of opening a fresh pack — the crinkle of foil and that faint smell of gum — was unbeatable. I collected cards from every sport imaginable, followed teams obsessively, and as a proud Pittsburgh native, became a lifelong Pirates fan.

Of course, like many kids, I made some unforgettable mistakes — including sticking valuable cards in my bike spokes just to hear that “cool” sound. Still, one trade changed everything: swapping a few random cards and ending up with a complete 1985 Fleer NBA Sticker Set. I don’t remember what I gave up (hopefully not a Jordan rookie!), but that set still sits proudly in my collection today.

Stepping Away — and Coming Back Strong

Over time, college life pulled me away from collecting, but my love for sports never faded. Years later, when my son got hooked on basketball, I found myself drawn back into NBA sports cards — and wow, the hobby had evolved.

Suddenly, autographs, serial numbers, limited print runs, and glossy parallels replaced the simple cardboard of my childhood. Prices soared, grading became essential, and online marketplaces transformed how collectors connected. In short, it was exciting — and overwhelming.

Launching a Professional Sports Card Business

Eventually, what started as a small hobby turned into something much bigger. After attending card shows and diving into online auctions, I decided to take my passion full-time and build a professional sports card business.

Along the way, I learned more than I ever expected. I’ll be sharing posts that walk through every step — from forming an LLC and handling taxes to automating product uploads and selling accessories. (By the way, card sleeves and toploaders sell fast at local shows!)

Building the TZTEX Sports Website

From there, I built the TZTEX Sports site completely from scratch, and here’s what went into it:

  • Core Pages: A clean, trustworthy homepage, shop, and About section designed for collectors.

  • Custom Product Templates: Using Elementor Pro to create layouts for player, team, card number, and serial details.

  • Plugins: WooCommerce, FunnelKit, Omnisend, Yoast SEO, JetSmartFilter, ACF, and image optimization tools.

  • Import System: Integrated the Kronozio database with my Epson label scanner to streamline uploads. Check out my detailed Kronozio review.

  • Pricing Tools: Used eBay sold listings, Market Movers, and Card Ladder for real-time value tracking.

  • Google Shopping Integration: Synced with Merchant Center and tagged high-value NBA sports cards for targeted ads.

  • Analytics & Ads: Built Google Ads campaigns focused on high-intent searches and monitored performance for profit margins and best sellers.

As a result, I gained full control over my brand and built a foundation that can grow with the hobby.

Lessons from the Modern Hobby

Today, the world of NBA card collecting looks completely different from the past. Modern cards feature:

  • Premium materials and foil finishes

  • Autographs and patch memorabilia

  • Limited runs and serial numbers

  • Short prints and parallels

  • Strong investment potential

Because of this, collectors now have more options — and more challenges — than ever before.

Smart Tips for New Collectors

If you’re starting out, here are some strategies that can help:

  1. First, set a realistic budget to stay disciplined.

  2. Next, focus on rookies and rising stars for long-term upside.

  3. Then, learn grading standards — understand PSA, BGS, and SGC differences.

  4. Also, join the community; local shows and online forums are invaluable.

  5. Finally, track trends using eBay Sold, Market Movers, and Card Ladder.

By following these steps, you’ll build both knowledge and confidence as your collection grows.

Turning Passion Into Profit

Running a sports card business takes more than great cards. In fact, success depends on strong systems and consistency. You’ll need:

  • Reliable inventory organization and quality photography

  • Secure storage and shipping methods

  • Consistent marketing and social engagement

  • Excellent customer service and reputation management

In other words, reputation is everything in this hobby. The best sellers describe cards accurately, ship quickly, and treat every buyer like a long-term connection.

The Future of NBA Sports Cards

Looking ahead, the hobby continues to evolve — from digital cards and blockchain authentication to AI-powered pricing tools. As a result, collectors have more ways than ever to buy, sell, and showcase their favorite cards.

Whether you collect for nostalgia or investment, staying informed will help you stay ahead of the curve.

Ultimately, sports card collecting has brought incredible joy and friendships into my life. Launching TZTEX Sports reconnected me with that childhood spark — and with collectors who share it.

Moving forward, I’ll be sharing even more posts, including:

  • How to build your own sports card website

  • Automating product listings

  • Pricing and sourcing profitable inventory

  • Making the most of every card show

At the end of the day, this hobby thrives on passion, patience, and community — and that’s exactly what TZTEX Sports is all about. Check out my store and enjoy discounts based on how much you spend.
